Christopher McQuarrie on the ‘obscene’ stunts in Mission Impossible 7' and '8'

Mission: Impossible writer and director Christopher McQuarrie has provided a tantalising update on the upcoming seventh and eighth installments to the franchise, calling some of the stunts that Tom Cruise will have to film “obscene.”

McQuarrie first told Empire Magazine that the consistent rumours Cruise will one day go to the space with the franchise were false, before teasing, “We've figured out three obscene things that he's doing that I'm terrified of, that make the helicopter chase look like tinker toys.”

The filmmaker, who has previously written and directed Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible - Fallout, also opened up about the return of Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge for Mission: Impossible 7 and 8.

An addition that was particularly surprising as the character’s last appearance was all the way back in the 1996 original Mission: Impossible.

"I've been thinking about Kittridge going all the way back to Rogue Nation,” said McQuarrie, who then admitted that he could just never think of a good reason to bring him back.

“I’m much more interested in finding something great for that character to do. Early in this process I had an inkling that there could be a place for Kittridge – the tone of the movie, the shape of the movie lent itself to that. I realised, 'Kittridge has got to be in this scene.’”

“I had written it not knowing who was in it, and then suddenly Kittridge came into it and the scene was transformed, it was really fun. I got to call Henry Czerny and say, 'You're in! Will you be in it?' He was great about it.”

Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 are due out on July 23, 2021, and August 5, 2022, respectively, with McQuarrie admitting that filming on the back-to-back films is due to begin “soon.”
