Get Out makes history earning $200 million worldwide

Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ just made history…

But why is a $200 million box office haul such a big deal?

According to The Wrap, the gripping horror flick ‘Get Out’ is the first debut film by a black writer-director to hit the $200 million mark. And that’s quite an accomplishment.

“Just days after signing a lucrative first-look deal with Universal Pictures, Jordan Peele has become the first African-American writer-director to gross $200 million worldwide with his debut film, ‘Get Out’,” they revealed.

“Released back in late February, ‘Get Out’ crossed the milestone on Sunday with $173.8 million of its $204.3 million worldwide gross coming from domestic screens.”

And it’s not stopping there…

Apparently, ‘Get Out’ is just $3 million away from becoming the highest grossing debut for a black director – a title currently held by Clark Johnson for his 2003 flick, ‘S.W.A.T.’.

(Unlike ‘Get Out’, ‘S.W.A.T.’ had different writer and director credits)

Clearly this is a huge win for Peele, who is quickly turning heads after landing his lucrative deal with Universal Pictures. And hopefully, this is just the start of a long career from a very talented and interesting new writer-director.

‘Get Out’ shocked critics with a phenomenal $30 million opening, and was praised for its themes of racial conflict and microaggressions while still succeeding as a gripping horror in its own right.

Let’s hope Jordan Peele’s next projects can pull off something similar.
