Peter Fonda has said that Jack Nicholson is ‘basically retired’ from the acting business.

It could be that the pair are planning a retirement road trip, a la their classic movie ‘Easy Rider’ back in 1969, but Fonda made the comments to The Sun at a BAFTA event in Los Angeles.

“I think he is basically retired,” he told The Sun.

“I don’t want to speak for him but he has done a lot of work and he has done very well as a person financially.

“Sometimes people have a reason that you don’t know, and it’s not for me to ask. I don’t call him up and say, ‘Johnny,’ I call him Johnny Hop, ‘What are you doing?’ I would say, ‘How are you, how do you feel?’”

Nicholson’s work rate would certainly suggest a significant winding down.

He’s not been in a film since 2010, when he made an appearance in Casey Affleck’s divisive mockumentary ‘I’m Still Here’ with Joaquin Phoenix, and rom-com ‘How Do You Know’ with Paul Rudd and Reece Witherspoon, which sadly flopped rather catastrophically.

Rumours of his retirement of the 79-year-old have emerged before, however, like back in 2013, when it was said he was bowing out due to memory problems.

However, he clarified his situation back then by saying he was simply retiring from his legendary carousing with women.

“There were points in my life when I felt oddly irresistible to women. I’m not in that state now, which makes me sad,” he told The Sun.

“Now I don’t have any hair below my sock line, and that means you’re getting old, Jackie boy.

“It comes out of my ears instead. I mean, how many times have I slashed my earlobes?”

“I would love that one last romance, a real romance, but I’m not very realistic about it happening. What I can’t deny is my yearning.”
