Margot Robbie Wants Harley Quinn Movie: “I’m Trying To Make That Happen”

Warner Bros/DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’ has been met with a decidedly mixed reaction – and one of the elements which has proved the most divisive is its representation of central anti-heroine Harley Quinn’s relationship with The Joker.

While Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley has been widely praised, some fans and critics felt her scenes with Jared Leto’s ‘Mr J’ inappropriately romanticised an unhealthy coupling based around abuse. Others, notably one UK fan threatening legal action against the studio, felt cheated that The Joker wasn’t in the film more.

Either way, it’s clear that there’s plenty of room for more of Harley Quinn and The Joker’s story left to be told – and Robbie confirms that she is actively pushing for this to happen in a spin-off movie.

Asked about the possibility of a Harley and Joker-centred spin-off, the actress tells Tipsy Talk, “I’m trying to make that happen… there’s just so much more to do.”

Robbie has in fact been on board as both star and producer of an in-development Harley Quinn movie since the spring, but as The Hollywood Reporter revealed at the time this is not intended to be a solo movie as such.

Instead, the film will reportedly focus on a number of key female characters from the DC universe. No names have been named, but it seems fair to assume Harley’s comic book BFF Poison Ivy could be involved, not to mention Catwoman, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey.

Robbie makes clear to Tipsy Talk that taking on the popular character was not a responsibility she took on lightly:

“Harley’s got a massive fan base in the comic book world. I know what it’s like when there’s a character I really, really love, and someone’s going to be portraying it on screen. I’m just like, ‘please get it right, please get it right; please make all the things I love about that character evident on screen’…

“But aside from feeling that sort of responsibility, I feel like I hit the lottery. The chicks never get these roles! We never get the parts that have the funny one-liners, then the kick-arse action scenes, but then also an intricate character with an awesome story arc.

“You just don’t get that, especially not in a big-budget film.”

The actress also confirms that a lot of Harley and Joker material shot for ‘Suicide Squad’ wound up on the cutting room floor.

“We filmed so much of our backstory… they probably realised that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission that we were on… [but] the back story stuff was magic, and some of the stuff we shot was insane.

“They are flashbacks, and they’re meant to be snippets. I think when we were filming, maybe we got too engrossed in the flashbacks… it didn’t make sense to confuse the current storyline to incorporate all of that.”
