Michael Fassbender gets stabby in the latest Assassin's Creed trailer

Twentieth Century Fox has released a stylish new trailer for upcoming video game adaptation ‘Assassin’s Creed’.

Michael Fassbender stars in the swash-buckling, hay bail-diving, neck-stabbing adventure alongside Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons.

The trailer introduces us to Fassbender’s Callum Lynch, who is kidnapped by the Abstergo corporation who have a mysterious interest in his ancestry.

The sci-fi magic of Abstergo’s huge Animus contraption allows Callum to relive the action-packed life of his ancestor Aguilar, who was a member of the guild of assassin’s that gives the series its name.

As the trailer draws to a close it becomes apparent Callum is quite enjoying his time in 15th Century Spain during the Spanish Inquisition, and he may just be learning a combative trick or two along the way.

As ever with video game adaptations, the biggest question hanging over 'Assassin’s Creed’ is whether it will be the first genuinely good one, and it’s looking increasingly likely that it will be.

The talent is most certainly there with Fassbender, Cotillard as an Abstergo scientist, Irons as her father and Justin Kurzel in charge - who worked with the two leads in last year’s 'Macbeth’.

Brendan Gleeson, Ariane Labed and Michael K Williams also star.

Unlike most video game movies, 'Assassin’s Creed’ is also taking the sensible step of not directly adapting an existing story from the games, but using the series’ core concept and tropes to tell one of its own.

Written by 'Macbeth’s Michael Lesslie and 'Allegiant’ duo Bill Collage and Adam Cooper, 'Assassin’s Creed’ is set to be released in the UK on 1 January 2017.
