Michael Smiley confirms his secret Rogue One cameo
‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ may have just hit cinemas but we’re learning plenty of new things about the Gareth Edwards movie by the day.
With the film revealing particularly nice touches, including cool nods and some familiar moments to ‘Star Wars’ fans – none that we’ll mention here, obviously – we’v learned about one cameo in particular that’s come to light.
Warning: If you don’t want know which character Michael Smiley plays, then look away now.
For those who have seen ‘Rogue One’ already, you’ll be aware of the classic characters that appear. The likes of Grand Moff Tarkin and Princess Leia make full CGI appearances, but during the hustle and bustle of the movie we get a glimpse at another old face – Cornelius Evazan. If you recall, he’s one half of the punters that antagonise Luke Skywalker in the Cantina during ‘A New Hope’.
“He doesn’t like you,” Evazan tells Luke of his drinking buddy Ponda Baba. “I don’t like you either!” is his follow-up before Obi Wan slashes him in the chest and slices Baba’s arm off. Ouch.
Cut to ‘Rogue One’ and we see Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) bump into Evazan on the street, where utters the same line, but who’s the actor playing him?
British actor Michael Smiley took to Twitter to show everyone that he was the one behind the facial prosthetics of Evazan, with a sneaky mid-makeup photo.

It’s a cool touch that Smiley confirmed his cameo just yesterday (Saturday the 17th), which must’ve been hard to keep quiet this whole time. He wrote the caption ‘Dr Evazan, I presume’ to accompany the image.
But what does that mean? Well, he’s referring to the backstory of the character. He was once a promising cosmetic surgeon before being consumed by madness, performing experimental surgery on patients, leaving their horribly disfigured. His face was then disfigured after an encounter with a bounty hunter, before Baba rescued him.
Smiley’s not the only celeb to secure a dream cameo here: Rizzle Kicks’ Jordan revealed his secret part and everyone recalls James Bond actor Daniel Craig’s part as a Stormtrooper in ‘The Force Awakens’.
‘Rogue One’ has only been in cinemas a matter of days and already its taken a Death Star sized $291 million, with suggestion it’ll comfortably pass the $1 billion mark soon enough. Whether it’ll ride the wave of the success from last year’s ‘The Force Awakens’, which amassed over $2 billion, and make similar numbers is unknown but unlikely. But we shouldn’t rule out a surge after a breadth of positive reviews and reception from its audience.
