The ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot may have failed to ignite the box office, but plans to turn it into a franchise are carrying on regardless… at least, according to original ‘Ghostbusters’ creator, Ivan Reitman.

“There’s going to be many other Ghostbusters movies,” he told the Mr. Wavvy podcast (via comicbook.com). “They’re just in development right now.”

But what does this mean?

Although ‘Ghostbusters’ turned out a lot better than some fans expected, it failed to get the kind of numbers you might expect to secure itself a sequel. After all, it managed a worldwide gross of just $229 million, from a budget of $144 million.

Not a huge return, considering the franchise.

Of course, Paul Feig remains interested in returning for another movie. Whether or not he gets the chance remains to be seen. Even so, that doesn’t mean we won’t be getting another ‘Ghostbusters’ movie.

If a sequel were to go ahead, we can probably expect a much lower budget this time around. And then there’s the rumoured line-up of ‘Ghost Corps’ movie – the first of which was said to be a male-led ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot starring Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt.

Could there be even more ‘Ghostbusters’ films on the cards?

Absolutely. For one thing, rumours also indicated that we could get several ‘supernatural’ movies based in the ‘Ghostbusters’ universe… just without proton packs and station wagons.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But ‘Ghostbusters’ may yet return.

‘Ghostbusters’ is out now on DVD and Blu-ray.
