‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom’ has a brand new name… and ‘Godzilla 2’ is no longer the generically-titled ‘Godzilla’ sequel. That’s right – Legendary has given the upcoming sequels some new titles:

‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ and ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.

Buried in a press release about the studio’s latest hires, the new titles for Legendary’s ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Godzilla’ sequel were unceremoniously unveiled.

And considering the rather generic-sounding nature of them, that’s hardly surprising.

I mean, let’s face it – ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ hardly gets your imagination going. It’s a very generic-sounding subtitle, especially when you stack it up against the movie’s former name. We may not know what the maelstrom was, but it sounded infinitely more interesting.

Then there’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.

Yes, it’s far better than ‘Godzilla 2’… but do we really have to give the film a name which so obviously brings us back to the black and white era of monster movies? It’s more than a little cheesy – and clearly a reference to the 1956 ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters!’.

Still, it’s better than slapping the number two at the end of the title.

And it might even be a bit more subtle than that…

Let’s not forget that Legendary is in charge of ‘King Kong’ who will be reappearing in ‘Kong: Skull Island’ early next year… as well as going head-to-head with Godzilla in the glorious ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ in 2020.

Could the title of the ‘Godzilla’ sequel be a little taunt against the other Legendary monster? And will he retain the title after they face off against each other?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. Either way, it’s an interesting new title.

‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ heads to cinemas on 23 February 2018.

‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ heads to cinemas on 22 March 2019.
