Prime Video UK September 2022: Best new movies and TV from 'The Rings of Power' to 'Tenet'

There's no question as to what the biggest arrival on Prime Video UK this month will be. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, set centuries before the main Lord of the Rings series, is the most expensive TV show of all time and a huge investment for the streaming service behind it. Led by Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, it explores the forging of the titular rings and the rise of the evil Sauron.

Elsewhere on the streamer this month, 2020 blockbusters Tenet and Bill and Ted Face the Music will be available for subscribers. There's also an English language remake of the mysterious European horror movie Goodnight Mommy, with Naomi Watts in the title role.

New movies coming to Prime Video UK in September 2022

Flight / Risk (9 September)

Karim Amer and Omar Mullick helm this documentary, which delves into an extraordinary aviation disaster. It follows family members, whistleblowers and legal teams involved in the aftermath of two Boeing 737 Max planes crashing within a six month period in 2018 and 2019.

Goodnight Mommy (16 September)

In 2014, the Austrian horror movie Goodnight Mommy received acclaim on its release and was selected as the country's entry for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. Now, director Matt Sobel has transplanted the story to the US, with Naomi Watts in the lead role as a woman wearing considerable bandaging after a facial surgery. Soon, her twin sons begin to suspect that the person beneath the bandages might not be their mother at all.

My Best Friend's Exorcism (30 September)

In this teen horror set at the tail end of the 1980s, Eighth Grade breakout star Elsie Fisher plays a teenager who believes that something evil might have taken hold of her best friend (Amiah Miller) in the wake of an evening spent skinny dipping.

The movie traces her attempts to get her buddy back, hoping that their bond is strong enough to overcome malevolent forces.

New TV coming to Prime Video UK in September 2022

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power S1 (weekly from 2 September)

The time has come. After months of first look images and drip-fed information from the filming in New Zealand, Prime Video is finally unveiling The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. With opulent sets and a huge ensemble cast, the series tells the story of the Second Age in Tolkien's universe. Saint Maud star Morfydd Clark leads the cast as Galadriel, with Robert Aramayo portraying Elrond.

As the series expands, it will depict the rise of Sauron and the process of the rings of power being created, as well as the previously unseen kingdom of Númenor and the last alliance between elves and men.

A Private Affair S1 (16 September)

This eight-part drama set in the autonomous Spanish region of Galicia follows an upper class woman who joins forces with her butler to investigate a serial killer plaguing the local area.

Prisma S1 (21 September)

This Italian coming-of-age drama follows the complex dynamics of gender and sexuality at play among a group of young people. Mattia Carrano leads the cast in a dual role as a pair of twin brothers who look the same but experience the world in hugely different ways.

Academy Dreams: Leeds United (23 September)

Football documentaries have become a hallmark of Prime Video's output, with this one looking at the inner workings of the Leeds academy across the 2021/22 season — a year in which they broke the record for the most teenage debutants in a Premier League season. Former footballer Vinnie Jones serves as narrator.

September Mornings S2 (23 September)

Transgender singer-songwriter Liniker returns in the lead role of Cassandra in this Brazilian drama series about a trans woman trying to navigate dating while pursuing a music career. The second season deals with the fallout from the arrival of Cassandra's son.

Jungle S1 (30 September)

Six-part drama series Jungle is set in the world of rap and drill music in modern London. (Prime Video)

This six-part British drama uses an innovative combination of scripted dialogue and music to unfurl a story set within the rap and drill music scene in London. Featuring real artists from that world, it follows the interlocking stories of various strangers.

Un Extraño Enemigo S2 (30 September)

Four years after its first season aired on Prime Video, this Mexican political thriller — the title translates as An Unknown Enemy — continues to explore the complex wranglings around the politics of Mexico City in the 1960s and 1970s.
