'Saved by the Bell' sequel series in the works with original cast members

Saved by the Bell is returning to the small screen with a brand new series.

The original sitcom ran from 1989 to 1993 on NBC but now its been confirmed that a sequel season has been greenlit with Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez reprising their roles.

The two actors played Jessie Spano and A.C. Slater, respectively, and will be producing this new comedy that will see Tracey Wigfield serve as a showrunner.

Wigfield was a writer on 30 Rock but more recently created Great News. She will work with original series creator Peter Engel and Franco Bario (Great News) as well as Lopez and Berkley who will also serve as producers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plot will focus on what happens after California Governor Zack Morris (Gosselaar's role) closes too many low-income high schools.

This will see the affected students moved to high performing schools like Bayside High (the original series’ high school) where the over-privileged teens soon get a reality check.

A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano are now reportedly parents with their kids attending their old high school.

Saved by the Bell celebrated its 30th anniversary this year and the original cast also included Dustin Diamond’s Screech, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen’s Kimberly and Lark Voorhies’ Lisa.

It focused on the trials and tribulations of high school life, from dating to drug use.

The success of the original series saw two spin-offs produced: Saved by the Bell: The College Years ran for one and Saved by the Bell: The New Class ran for seven seasons.

This new series will launch on NBCUniverssal’s new streaming service Peacock.

Gosselaar is currently signed on to star in ABC's Black-ish prequel comedy, Mixed-ish, but he’s reportedly in talks to return as Zack as is Thiessen who stars in Netflix series Alexa & Katie.

Diamond alienated his fellow cast members after publishing a tell-all book about their time on the show, alleging it was filled with sex and drugs behind-the-scenes.

in 2015 he was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to four months in prison.

After serving three months he was released on probation but in 2016 he violated his terms and was sent back to jail.

It’s unclear if he has been approached to return to the series.
