Actresses Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar recreated their iconic Cruel Intentions kiss for the MTV Movie and TV Awards: Greatest of All Time on Sunday. They won the Legendary Lip Lock award 20 years after winning Best Kiss at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards.

The original kiss, which took place in the 1999 film, was a big deal because prior to that there had been very little representation of same-sex relationships in pop culture, especially for young people.

"I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people for so long is not just for the initial shock value," Blair said, "but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realise certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are."

Gellar added, “It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture. And also, it was super hot.”

When they won for Best Kiss back in 2000, they reenacted the famous smooch on stage during their acceptance speech. And even though coronavirus precautions make it difficult to kiss nowadays, the two women gave another reenactment their best try.

Unfortunately, as they both leaned in for the kiss, they smacked into a plexiglass divider. Despite the obstruction they kept kissing for a moment. Then Gellar turned to the camera, saying, “Stay safe, MTV. And 2020, end soon.”

MTV Movie and TV Awards: Greatest of All Time aired Sunday night.

The acting duo recreated their famous smooch as recently as June this year. In celebration of Blair's 48th birthday on 23 June, Gellar shared a throwback photo of the pair at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards where they picked up the gong for Best Kiss.

"Since I will have to stay six feet away from you today (and wear a mask) this will be as close as I get to giving you a birthday kiss. Happy Birthday @selmablair," she wrote.

The following day, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star shared an update confirming that she "got [her] kiss" as she appeared in a snap alongside Blair who was giving her a peck on top of a mask decorated with bejewelled lips.
