Star Trek 4 'has been shelved'

The plans for a fourth Star Trek movie in the rebooted series have been shelved by Paramount Pictures, according to reports.

Deadline has revealed that director S.J. Clarkson, who’d signed up to helm the sequel to Star Trek Beyond, has now moved on.

Instead, she’ll be directing the hotly anticipated Game of Thrones ‘Age of Heroes’ prequel series pilot for HBO.

In response to the report, Paramount told Screen Rant: “We have no comment on this for the time being.”

Clarkson was set to become the first female director to helm a Star Trek movie in the franchise’s history, but it signals the latest in a series of woes for the veteran sci-fi property in the big screen.

The 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot signalled a new vigour for the franchise, and a new cast, with Chris Pine taking on the role of a young James T. Kirk, alongside the likes of Zachary Quinto as Spock and Karl Urban as Bones.

Star Trek Into Darkness did even better box office office business than the first movie, but fared less well among fans, while Star Trek Beyond was a pretty significant box office failure.

Talk of a Quentin Tarantino-penned movie had been floated, but then reported contract negotiations between Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth, who’d played Kirk’s father in the 2009 film, were said to have collapsed in August last year.

Whether the Tarantino project will arrive to save the day is not yet known, but Trekkies still have Netflix series Star Trek: Discovery and a planned new reboot project with Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard to keep them warm.
