First look: White House Down trailer

Die Hard in the Oval Office…

Not content with destroying the White House once, ‘Independence Day’ disaster-master Roland Emmerich is giving it another go. This time in epic patriotic blow-up-a-thon, ‘White House Down’.

‘White House Down’ sees Channing Tatum’s Capitol Police officer called upon to save the President (Jamie Foxx), when a pesky paramilitary group interrupt a trip to the White House with his daughter.

Think ‘Die Hard’ in the Oval Office.

Speaking via satellite link at a cast Q&A in London, genre legend Emmerich told us what he thought made ‘White House Down’ his worthy return to action:

“America gets brought down by people from within,” said the ‘2012’ director. “With every movie it’s like foreign terrorists or some other country.  But I don’t think that’s feasible. That would not even be possible…. This is more like a coup d'état thriller.”

Joking about Emmerich’s explosive style, star Channing Tatum told us “I think he’s destroyed 40% of the actual world at some point.”

He added: “This is not an alien movie. It’s not ‘Independence Day 2’. This is about America coming to a serious point.”

Alright , it’s all very similar to ‘Olympus Has Fallen’, out 17 April, with an equally terrorist-ridden, President-rescuing plot. Still, nobody blows up the White House quite like Roland Emmerich.

‘White House Down’ is out in the UK 6 September 2013.
