According to The Wrap, M.J. is to be played by Disney Channel star Zendaya in the forthcoming reboot of the web-slinging superhero.
It was revealed back in March that the 19-year-old actress and singer, best known for her role in the teen sitcom ‘Shake It Up’, had joined the cast.
She was even spotted in the teaser that Sony unveiled at Comic-Con last month, with director Jon Watts saying she was playing a character called ‘Michelle’.
But seemingly fans smelled a potential rat even then.
Now, according to the reports, one of the Spidey twists in the new movie will be the reveal that ‘Michelle’ is in fact the iconic Spidey love interest, opposite Brit actor Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
Zendaya would pick up the role from Kirsten Dunst, who was the last to play M.J. in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 to 2007, opposite Tobey Maguire.
So far Sony has declined to comment on the matter.
The movie, also starring Donald Glover, Marisa Tomei and Michael Keaton (plus a cameo from Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark), is due out in July, 2017.
