K-2SO steals every scene in Star Wars: Rogue One

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ director Gareth Edwards rather likes K-2SO.

During an interview with Disney Rewards, the ‘Rogue One’ director revealed that he thinks Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO steals every scene in the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ spin-off.

“Alan had to wear this rather silly-looking outfit with dots on it while we were filming, and he always felt like the uncool guy on the set surrounded by actors in super cool costumes,” he explained.

But the director swore it would be worth it in the end.

“I would tell him, ‘Alan, don’t worry. You’re going to steal every scene you’re in’,” he said. “And I was right. Once we put the robot overlay in, he was fantastic. He brings a lot of humor to the film.”

The new droid, named K-2SO, is quite a big deal. After all, as we know from the likes of R2-D2 and C-3PO, a droid can provide much needed laughs in the galaxy far, far away. And the new former-Imperial droid is no exception.

‘Liberated’ from the Empire and reprogrammed by Captain Cassian Andor, K-2SO isn’t quite the droid he once was… and now has a few personality ‘quirks’ to deal with. Although we’ve not seen an awful lot of him so far, it seems that K-2 will be the opposite of C-3PO - his dry wit and stubborn personality making him a force to be reckoned with.

Of course, Alan Tudyk - who provided the voice of K-2SO - is a seasoned voice actor.

Having worked extensively with Disney on a number of high-profile films such as ‘Frozen’, ‘Moana’, Wreck-It Ralph’ and ‘Zootopia’, he’s no stranger to voice work. And on set, he was just as imposing - wearing a motion capture suit and special stilts to mimic the size and shape of his CGI character.

Will K-2SO really steal the show?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But I think he’s going to be brilliant.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
