'Wonder Woman 1984' gets a bright new poster with amended release date

Following the delay of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. has issued a new poster for the superhero sequel with its updated release date.

Patty Jenkins’ DC Comics film, starring Gal Gadot in the title role, was originally scheduled to land on 5 June, but that date was pushed back to 13 August due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The new poster is as garish as all its predecessors and shows Diana Prince in a classic superhero pose wearing her new gold armour and brandishing the lasso of truth.

Chris Pine is also returning for the sequel to the 2017 box office hit, joining Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen.

It fast forwards action from 1918 to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord (Pascal) and The Cheetah (Wiig).

“Why 1984? We wanted to bring Diana into the modern world, but the '80s is a period that Wonder Woman is quite synonymous with,” Jenkins recently told Cinemablend. “So it was great to see her there, but most importantly, it's sort of the height of Western civilisation and the success of the world that we all live in in the aftermath of now.”

“So I was curious to collide our Wonder Woman into the height of our current modern belief system, and what kind of villains come out of that, and see what happens. So it all came quite naturally.”

There had been rumours that the film may skip cinemas and go straight to digital while cinemas are closed around the world, but that was swiftly debunked by Warner Bros., that promised the film would get a full theatrical release.

Some films released before the outbreak have been brought onto VOD platforms early, including DC film Birds of Prey, while Universal Pictures has decided to release Trolls: World Tour straight to digital.
