Spider-Man: Homecoming Adds Michael Chernus As Villain

It’s official – ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ has another villain.

According to Deadline, 39-year-old American actor Michael Chernus has joined ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ in a villainous role… and we know exactly who he’ll be playing.

“Michael Chernus has joined Sony Pictures and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming as one of the villains in the reboot of the franchise,” they revealed. “Chernus will play Phineas Mason the Tinkerer in the film, which is being directed by Jon Watts and stars Tom Holland in the lead role.”

Of course, this makes Michael Chernus the first official villain in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’… although he is rumoured to star opposite the film’s main villain – The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton.

“Chernus, whose credits include Captain Phillips, Aloha, The Bourne Legacy and Orange Is the New Black, will play opposite villain Michael Keaton.”

But who is The Tinkerer?

Phineas Mason (aka The Tinkerer) is a regular supervillain in the ‘Spider-Man’ comic books. A brilliant inventor and technician, he designs advanced weaponry for many of Spider-Man’s biggest enemies.

In fact, he created Mysterio’s suit as well as Scorpion’s tail, and even the Grim Reaper’s scythe weapon. He was also once coerced into working with The Vulture… and this could come into play in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.

After all, the Vulture’s winged harness may be in need of some improvements.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man, with Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. They’re joined by Tony Revolori, Zendaya, Tyne Daly, Martin Starr, Logan Marshall-Green and Michael Keaton as the Vulture.

Jon Watts will direct the movie, based on a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ heads to cinemas on 7 July 2017.
