Mads Mikkelsen Says Doctor Strange Is A Different Flavour Of Marvel Movie (Exclusive)
‘Doctor Strange’ is like no other Marvel movie…
At least, that’s what ‘Doctor Strange’ star Mads Mikkelsen thinks.
During an interview with Yahoo! Movies UK to support the release of ‘Men & Chicken’, Mads Mikkelsen explained why ‘Doctor Strange’ is like nothing we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before… and told me that it could have been even crazier.
“If you look at the comic books, the comic books are quite different [to other Marvel stories],” he explained. “I think that the film will be different from the other [Marvel] films that we’ve seen, but not as different as the books are, because that was basically the ‘60s and ‘70s – it was more like an acid trip.”

“I don’t know if you’re familiar with the old comics but it’s quite a specific universe, with Kung Fu and Magic… so what’s not to love, really?”
‘Doctor Strange’ follows the story of a gifted neurosurgeon who loses the ability to operate after a horrific car accident. Travelling the globe in search of a way to fix his broken hands, he eventually encounters the Ancient One… learning the ancient mystical and martial arts.
And so begins his spiritual journey to become Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme.
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Stephen Strange, it certainly takes the classic comic book storyline as a jumping off point.
But it apparently won’t be quite so crazy…
“We’ve taken that fascination of the time into something we can relate to today,” he added. “So you still have the energy, you still have the colours, you still have the madness, but you also have something you can identify with. I think that was a necessity – if not, you would just make a crazy film. But you still have it there – you have all the action, all the good ingredients you get in a Marvel film, but it will have a different flavour, that’s for sure.”
All we’ve seen of ‘Doctor Strange’ so far is the official teaser trailer… and with the twisting cityscapes invoking a sense of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’, it’s clear that we’re getting something very, very different.
Something that might even bear a resemblance to those ‘60s and ‘70s acid trips.
But how does Mads Mikkelsen fit into all this?
At the moment, very little is known about his character, except that he’s playing a villain. But according to Mads, even that is up for interpretation.
“He’s not a villain in that way – he’s a man who believes in something else than the hero,” he explained. “That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to make the planet look wonderful or he wants to save the world as well, but he has a different way of doing it. He is the antagonist, of course, but he’s not necessarily wrong.”
Of course, we’ve already seen Mikkelsen appear on set with some very demonic-looking makeup… but does the man go through a transformation in the movie? That seems likely.
“Within that world, there is definitely some strong characters and strong character work and especially the character of Doctor Strange,” he said. “Doctor Strange is so complex and so interesting and Benedict is a complete perfect choice for that one.”
Mads Mikkelsen will next appear in ‘Men & Chicken’ – a rather dark Danish comedy film by director Anders Thomas Jensen.
‘Doctor Strange’ heads to cinemas on 28 October 2016.
